Research & development in USD billion (% of net sales)

Novartis research and development efforts are driven by a commitment to human health and well-being. Working at the frontier of science and technology means our activities may involve ethical issues, including animal welfare or stem-cell research. We recognize the importance of an informed debate about these issues and welcome the opportunity to engage in constructive dialogue.
Making long-term investments in better health
On average, only one in 10 000 originally synthesized compounds will clear all regulatory hurdles and become a commercially available drug. The research and development process for bringing a new drug to market can take eight to 10 years to complete and cost up to USD 1.7 billion.
